JIM LARRANAGA
George Mason Patriots Head Coach
Jim Larranaga is widely respected in college basketball for his knowledge,
innovation and ability to relate to today's student-athletes.
An outstanding player himself during a productive college career at Providence and
later in the European professional leagues, Coach Larranaga teaches the skills and
techniques to allow players to maximize their potential.
Coach Larranaga came to George Mason in 1997 and quickly instilled a winning attitude
in the Patriots program. He has enjoyed success in the coaching profession for over 25
years at various levels. Coach Larranaga worked as an assistant at Davidson College and at
the University of Virginia and as a head coach at American International College and
Bowling Green State University,
Coach Larranaga was part of two Final Four teams while at Virginia, where the Cavaliers
averaged better than 27 wins per season during his tenure. He later went on to record
170-144 mark in 11 seasons as head coach at BowlingGreen, taking his team to three
postseason tournaments. Coach Larranaga was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the
Year in 1997 when his squad went 22-10.
He is the originator of the scramble defense, a system admired and copied by coaches on
all levels. Coach Larranaga's teams are known for their defensive tenacity and offensive
efficiency. He departs his vast basketball knowledge in ways easy to understand and
implement. |
Camp Highlights
An outstanding camp staff of local high school coaches, college coaches and
college players.
Guest lectures and demonstrations by former George Mason standouts, local college and
high school coaches.
Outstanding competition as each camper will participate in daily contests
and team games.
Individual daily fundamental instruction.
Awards given within each age group. Campers will participate in 5-on-5, 3-on-3,
one-on-one, hot shot, war in the paint, and individual skills competition.
